Last Rites Held for Mrs. F.F. Jones, Pioneer Resident Here

Funeral services for Mrs. F.F. Jones, who died Dec. 10 in New York City at the age of 87 years were held here Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Jones residence, conducted by the Rev. E. M. Buehler. The singing was by Miss Marjorie Stillians, accompanied by Mrs. Frances Wheeler, and the pallbearers were Clifford Pettengill, Steve Bentley, John W. Palmquist, Albert F. Davie, Guy W. Kehr and Austin Rusk. Burial was beside the husband of the deceased in the Villisca cemetery.
Maude Hanes was born Sept. 15,1857 in Swazy, O., and came with her parents to Iowa in 1869. She was married to Frank F. Jones in 1880 and two years later they came to Villisca to make their home. They joined the Methodist church here by letter in 1882 and Mrs. Jones was a member continuously for 62 years.
She was especially alert to social problems and progress and invested much time and energy in the missionary work of her church, serving as treasurer for many years. She enjoyed travel and had more than average opportunity for it, both in America and abroad, but she was always happy to return to "the best country and the best state in the world".
Mrs. Jones' son Albert preceeded her in death, as did her husband. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Letha of New York City. Those who besides the daughter came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. Kittie Myers and Florence MacCormiack, New York City, Edward Jones, Gravity, Iowa, Mrs. Stella Payton, Vera Payton, Mrs. Zula Pfander, Wilburt Day, Mrs. Mabel Stipe and Mrs. W. T. Kelley, Clarinda; and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gibson, Cedar Falls.

Albert V. Jones, 49, Resident Here All His Lifetime, Dies

Albert V. Jones, 49, a lifelong resident of Villisca and vicinity died at 6:45 Friday morning at his farm home on the north edge of Villisca. His death, caused by a cerebral hemorrhage, followed after 15 months during which he was an almost helpless invalid. However, during these months he made frequent visits down town where he took great pleasure meeting his many thoughtful friends who stopped by to greet him and offer words of encouragement and cheer.
His body was taken Friday to Wolfe and Gourley funeral parlor where it was prepared for burial and returned Saturday to the Albert Jones home. Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday from the home of the deceased's parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.F. Jones on Fifth Avenue, with the Rev. F. Clayburg and the Rev. L. Carpenter in charge. Internment was in the Villisca cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Davies sang at the last rites, accompanied by Mrs. John L. Wheeler at the piano. Pallbearers were Steve and Vurl Bentley, Harold Jett, Clifford Pettengill, James F. Prather and John L. Palmquist.
Born in Villisca on December 28th 1885, Albert V. Jones attended the Villisca schools and after graduation attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa where he completed a business course.
Upon his return to Villisca, he became associated with his father in the Jones hardware and implement store in which he was active for several years. He was married to Miss Dona Bentley of Hawleyville and their home has always been in Villisca. After leaving the hardware business, Mr. Jones engaged in farming and livestock raising in which he became greatly interested. At the time of his death, he was living on his dairy farm here which he managed since moving there several years ago. Besides his wife, he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.F. Jones of Villisca, and one sister, Miss Letha Jones of New York City.

Funeral services were held Thursday June 7, 1973 at the Sutphen funeral home for Letha Jones. Rev. Eldon Haworth officiated at the 2 pm services. Casketbearers were Clifford Pettengill, Paul Fisher, John Palmquist, Tom Rusk,Paul Williams and Bob Neal. Flowerbearers were Velma Else and Helen Penwell. Music by Mrs. Quincy Dunn. Selection was "Be Still My Soul" Interment and concluding services in the Villisca Iowa Cemetery with Sutphen Funeral home in charge.
Letha M. Jones of New York City, died June 3, 1973 at the Lynwood Nursing Home. She was returned to her home town of Villisca, Iowa for burial. Funeral Services were held at the Sutphen Funeral Home June 7,1973 at 2 pm with Rev. Eldon Haworth of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the beautiful Villisca Cemetery.
Letha was born in Villisca in 1882, the daughter of F.F. and Maude Hanes Jones. She went through the Villisca schools graduating in the class of 1898. After graduation from High School, she went to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon Iowa where she earned her BA degree in 1902. She returned to Villisca for her first teaching job, staying for three years then to Clarinda for two years and then back to Villisca for two more years.
After teaching in High School for a few years, she enrolled in Columbia University in New York City from which she received a Master's Degree in Psychology. After leaving Columbia, she taught in colleges in North Carolina and Florida for a few years, returning to New York to teach in the Maxwell Training School for Teachers. Maxwell was finally incorporated into the New York City college system where she taught until she retired.
Her parents and brother, Albert preceeded her in death. She is survived by one cousin, Ellsworth Jones of Corning. Mrs. Dona Jones Kelly of Clarinda, and two second cousins, Miss Vera Payton and Mrs. Zula Pfander also of Clarinda.
Letha lived on Riverside Drive overlooking the Hudson River for many years. She was a member of the Riverside Church (nondenominational). Though she had not lived in Villisca for many years, she never broke ties with her home town. She came to spend her summers with her parents as long as they lived and continued coming for summers after they had passed away.
When Mrs. Jones became ill, Kittie Meyers of Villisca became her personal attendant. After the death of Mrs. Jones, Kittie stayed on with Letha for many years until her health failed her. Letha was a 50-year member of the PEO and a member of the National Retired Teachers Association.
As so appropriately stated by her many friends- We shall always remember Letha as an energetic, intelligent lady. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She loved life and people and they loved her and admired her accomplishments.
